I'm a twenty something Sydney girl who thinks she is a European. After spending the last decade going back and forward from Australia to Europe studying, travelling and gathering international friends I finally got my dream job and am PAID to do everything that I used to pay to do! How good is that?
I work for Topdeck Travel as an On Road Chef. Basically if you book on to one of our camping style trips, you will be lucky enough to be followed around the great European cities by your own personal chef. Every day is different, every day is great or a great learning experience. In between trips I work in one of our permanent site tents dotted around the continent and there you will find me serving up three meals a day for up to 250 passengers (to hear about what a typical day is like, read this).
Other parts of the world do call to me, I've had a ball on a month long road trip in the US of A, I have lived, worked and travelled in Fiji several times, in New Zealand I was able to hit the road solo and learnt how it was to travel by myself and Canada and I will probably get along a little better if next time I visit it isn't -28 degrees. But as hard as I try I can't pull myself away from Europe.
Some of my favorite experiences have been:
- Having my 21st in Santorini in a cute little B'n'B with just a few close friends and a yacht ride to celebrate.
- Riding bikes all over Inishmore, one of the Aran Islands in the far west of Ireland.
- Being in the crowd at Kate and Will's wedding and even getting to see the first kiss on the balcony of Buckingham Palace.
- Singing loudly wearing a Dirndl with a stein in hand and a pork knuckle on the table at the Hofbrauhaus in Munich
- Canyoning in freezing water in Austria.
- Huge party nights in the old town of Prague that always leave you wondering how you got home....
- Walking in to Treptow Park in Berlin for the first time and feeling that this city was going to be one that changed me.
- Feeling the pulse of Barcelona, morning, midday or night the city always hums.
- Learning from friends about the many myths (some of which involve dragons!) that helped build the city of Krakow.
- Venice, and what it feels like to be able to call such a magical city 'home'.
- Picking the shores of the Thames for treasures.
And so many more, every day is a new experience!
Join in the fun by following my adventures (and maybe even mishaps) as I continue to discover my favorite continent on this big ol' earth.
May your feet stay light and your mind eager,
Gemma x
